<image:title>Michael Braten - Michael Braten (retired instructor)</image:title>
<image:caption>Raised in an Irish home, in Oakland California. Michael Braten was no stranger to the tough streets of Oakland. At age ten, Mike was greatly inspired by martial art master, and Hollywood actor, Bruce Lee. Blown away by Bruce Lee’s film choreography, and mastery of movement, in 1975, Mike quickly joined a Taekwondo school, and learned the art of kicking. By 1980 he started training under the Okinawan Karate Master, Sid Campbell. Having a Taekwondo background, Mike was able to earn a black belt within a year. He had a natural talent, and was known for his quick hand speed, and high level kicking. In 1983, Mike’s teacher Sid Campbell, offered him a small martial arts role, as an extra in the film, Ninja Busters. Shortly before that, Mike met Chris Suboreau, at a nightclub in San Francisco, and by rare coincidence, met for a second time on the movie set. Developing a close friendship, Mike started training under Chris. Mike’s training under Chris, was focused on three core aspects of fighting; classic boxing, self defense, and overall combat theory. Through Chris’s connections, Mike was introduced to a new world of elite fighters and instructors, attending workshops under big names like Jesse Glover, Larry Hartsell, Ed Hart, and even the great World Champion Kickboxer, Joe Lewis. At the time these men were known as some of the best combat sports and self defense instructors in the world. A key ingredient in Mike’s new training was geared towards; technical boxing, and the development of short range power. He was now learning how to generate force at close range, an area that is not normally developed for such a tall fighter, standing at 6’5”. Chris, being a boxing connoisseur, helped elevate Mike to a higher degree of combat theory, and, training methods. To this day, Chris and Mike are still close friends. In 1988, Mike began training at a historical boxing gym in San Francisco, called Newman’s. Training alongside competitive amateurs and professionals, was the everyday atmosphere, a gym where top pro’s came through, to prepare for big fights, like Luisito Espinosa, and even past fighters such as, World Champion Muhammed Ali, and George Foreman. At this time, Mike met a trainer, named Paul Finger, a professional boxing coach, that moved to San Francisco, who trained World Champion fighters, back at 5th St Gym in Miami. Paul was managing his son, Desmond Finger, an undefeated professional boxer, with the record of 14 - 0 & 12 KO’s. Desmond was the sparring partner for many world champion fighters at the time. A sparring match was set up, between Mike and Desmond. Paul, quickly spotted the talent in Mike. From that day forward, they built up a close relationship. Paul began training Mike privately, with an old pro style of boxing; where blocks & counters, quick head movement, and cutting off the ring, were mastered. Mike spent the next year as a dedicated student under Paul, and trained with his son Desmond, as a sparring partner. By the late 90’s, Mike became a private instructor. His training was focused on self defense; using a blend of classical martial arts, and traditional boxing. In 2003, Chris Suboreau was training a young private student, named Leo Larsen (see bio above). Mike was introduced to Leo through Chris, and was asked to co-train him, in Leo’s pursuit of combat sports. And so the rest is history. Michael Braten is known for his appearance and written chapter, in the book, “Sonny Umpad’s Eskrima, The Life and Teachings of a Filipino Martial Arts Master”, by George M. Yore. (Link for book) Michael Braten is currently a retired teacher, and resides in Reno, Nevada. He may accept private lessons, upon special request. At GMB, our goal is to provide proper boxing instruction to our clients. The proper coaching and supervision provided by our team of professionals enables anyone to pursue the sport, regardless of experience. Mastery of the fundamentals allows our clients to learn boxing safely. Our structured and directed approach to coaching ensures progress without painful and costly injuries. We teach classic and effective boxing techniques that were born in the sport’s heyday, in combination with relevant contemporary methods. The roots of Gold Mountain Boxing date back to the late 1930s, when our original coaches began their training. Our coaches have trained under more than a dozen master trainers and fighters, and continue to learn today from those who have knowledge to share. Several of our trainers have multi-generational roots in the sport. We don’t believe in reinventing the wheel nor do we believe in ignoring recent advances in the art and science of boxing. All developments and advances in boxing and conditioning are evaluated before inclusion in our program. We teach a simple, classical style of boxing without showboating or nonfunctional techniques. Only the safest and most effective techniques and strategies are taught. Boxers must concentrate on proper execution of the tested basics in order to avoid discouragement and injury. By drawing on the knowledge proven effective during boxing’s golden age, we ensure that our students will learn and progress.</image:caption>

<image:title>Chris Suboreau - Chris Suboreau (retired instructor)</image:title>
<image:caption>Chris Suboreau an Oakland California native, started his combat training at a very early age through his father Pete, who was a local boxer in the late 1930’s. Pete Suboreau boxed out of Eddy St Gym which was owned by bare knuckle prize fighter Dan Sugar. Back in those days Pete was best friends with an early 20th century Flyweight Champion named Sammy Lee. In the mid 40’s Pete was asked to do a couple exhibitions with the champ. By this time Pete was well seasoned in the game and the two fighters put on a great show. Years passed, Pete hung up the gloves but was able to obtain trade secrets and world class training methods, which he would then later pass on to his son Chris Suboreau. This would set a high standard in Chris’s life and build a solid base for other fighting styles he would pursue. At age nine Chris began his martial arts training under world renowned Jiu Jitsu Master Wally Jay, spending the next 6 years of his childhood learning small circle Jiu Jitsu. Inspired by the classical arts, Chris dedicated the next several decades of his life to Chinese martial arts, training under respected names like Wing Chung Master Bill Fong and eventually landing himself a black belt under legendary Grandmaster Al Novak, the last surviving tenth-degree Kajukenbo Master. By 1985 Chris was granted an Advanced Level Certificate from Grandmaster Al Novak, a rare and honorable achievement. Throughout the years boxing was a key element in Chris Suboreau’s development. In the late 70’s Chris was a regular attendee at the Hayward Aztlan Boxing Club and Left Hook Boxing Gym, the stables for many elite fighters and trainers of the era. Training alongside seasoned amateurs and professionals, through arguably the sport's most competitive era, helped shape and mold Chris into a technical, hard contact fighter, where he was able to combine elements of traditional martial arts with classic technical boxing. By 1980 Chris became good friends with Ed Hart, an ex pro boxer from the 40’s and Non Classical Gung Fu Founder Jesse Glover, who were both former students of Bruce Lee. Now training and sharing knowledge with some of the best and most widely recognized self defense experts in the world, would create opportunities to train under other renowned combat experts like Larry Hartsell, Daniel Insanto, Richard Bustillo, and even the great World Champion Kickboxer Joe Lewis. In July of 1981 Chris met Eskrima Master Sonny Umpad, who developed the art known as Visayan Style Corto Kadena & Larga Mano Eskrima. Fully immersed in all aspects of combat training, Chris began a new journey training privately under master eskrimador, Maestro Sonny Umpad. Through the years their friendship and bond grew close and lasted till the unfortunate passing of Sonny Umpad on August 24 of 2006. Over the last several decades, Chris Suboreau has become a greatly respected name among many elite fighters and combat experts, occasionally providing workshops and seminars in empty hand combat and Eskrima. He’s also known for his appearance and written chapter in the book, “Sonny Umpad’s Eskrima, The Life and Teachings of a Filipino Martial Arts Master”, by George M. Yore. (Link for book) Today Chris is a retired Instructor but occasionally will take on private students in Santa Rosa California, where he currently resides.
